The Importance/ Essentiality/ Essentialness of Targoom- The Meaning (Using a verse from Az YaSHiiR)

Updated: Feb 3, 2021

ספר הגאולה (שמות) טו, יא

This week's Parashah (Torah Portion) details the splitting of the sea, And the Prophetic Experience that took place during this surreal reality- open divine intervention - an incomparable time.

The Sages transmit in the Miderush (The Transmitted MetaData of the Scripture) - That the sea in fact split into 12 separate splits for the 12 unique Tribes. (and not as it is portrayed in the world - in pop culture- one giant split (which is still amazing lol but this is extra amazing and deep beyond this essay at the moment.)

This event taking place before the eyes of hundreds of millions of people - Sparked "The 2nd Prophetic song that is said in this world" - Az Yashiir. As The Sages Transmit in the Targoom- The Meaning- of Shiir HaShiiriim. The Song of Songs.

Mosheh & Yisrael said the 2nd prophetic song of creation

As listed in the opening Targum of Shir HaSHirim).

This 2nd song is called "Az Yashiir"

"Then (They as one) Will Sing...

This Entire Song is very cryptic therefore has a lot of Targum

We will focus on one part of it- Exactly the middle of the song:

Normally this verse is read straight through like so:

מי כמכה באלם ה׳

Mi Kamokha BaEliim HaShem?

and translated like so:

“Who is like you in the gods/powers, Hashem?” Translated literally- this is almost a pagan question;

Because it sounds like "there are many gods and powers,

but who is like You, God." After we examine The TARGOOM- The Meaning of this verse written out explicitly

we'll see that this isn't how to even read this verse- straight through –

(as if we would be asking this seemingly pagan question, of course,)

and really it is read as 2 separate statements, broken up as follows:

מי כמכה. // באלים - ה׳.

X Mi Kamokha. // BaELiiM - HASHEM. "Who is like you. In all powers - (is) HaShem."

Mi Kamokha = Who is like you - is A rhetorical question/statement. Notice- it is Not with a question mark at the end- but a period.

It is not asking- but stating Rhetorically. WHO IS (possibly even comparable to being) Like YOU

WHO is like you. Targoom: = Meaning: לית בר מינך

Leiith Bar MiiNach"

"THERE IS NO ONE BUT YOU."// "THERE IS NO ONE OUTSIDE FROM YOU."

("THERE IS NO SON FROM YOU")

באלם ה׳

BaELIIM= IN ALL ELIIM = POWERS

IS ONLY YOU HASHEM

Targoom: = Meaning: את הוא אלהא ייי

"AT HOO ELAHAH HASHEM"

"YOU (FROM ALEPH TILL TAV) HOO (561) (THE ENTIRE TORAHS)

ARE THE GOD, HASHEM NAME OF THE INFINITE BEING

GENERATOR OF EXISTENCE,

GIVER OF THE TWO TORAHS

SPOKEN & WRITTEN.

// THERE IS JUST YOU HASHEM

THE GIVER OF ALL POWER

GENERATOR OF ALL EXISTENCE.

EVERY SINGLE POWER IS FROM YOU.

NOT A SINGLE BEING HAS POWER

OTHER THAN WHAT YOU GIVE IT.

“THERE IS NO ONE BUT YOU.

YOU ARE THEE (allpowerful) GOD,

HaShem.
